10 Common Challenges Women Face During Perimenopause and Menopause

Lia Liang, a holistic health coach, standing outdoors at sunset, representing strength and confidence for women navigating midlife health changes.

A few years ago, I started noticing changes in my body that I couldn’t ignore.

My energy wasn’t quite the same. My sleep became unpredictable. And somehow the number on the scale started creeping up—even though my habits hadn’t changed much.

Some days I felt strong and confident. Other days I wondered:

“What exactly is happening to my body?”

For someone who has been active and fit most of my life, it felt strange—almost like my body quietly changed the rules overnight without informing me.

And I know I’m not alone.

Over the years, I’ve heard many women say the same thing:

“I don’t recognize myself anymore.”

Many women begin experiencing these changes during perimenopause, the transitional stage leading up to menopause. For some women, this phase can start in their late 30s or early 40s and may last several years before menopause officially occurs.

During this time, hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone begin to fluctuate.

These shifts can affect everything — from your mood and energy levels to your sleep, metabolism, and even how your body regulates temperature, which can show up as night sweats or hot flashes.

Things that used to work — diet, exercise routines, even sleep habits — suddenly don’t seem to work the same way anymore.

Frustrating? Absolutely.

Sometimes it can feel like your body installed a brand-new operating system… but forgot to send you the instruction manual.

I understand this transition not only as a health coach, but also as a woman navigating these changes myself. Because of that, I feel deep compassion for women going through this stage of life.

The good news is that this transition doesn’t mean everything is going downhill.

With the right support, knowledge, and lifestyle habits, this phase can become a powerful opportunity to reconnect with your body and create a new level of strength and self-care.

Here are 10 common challenges many women experience during perimenopause and menopause.

1. Stubborn Weight Gain

Many women notice that weight suddenly becomes harder to manage, especially around the belly.

Hormonal changes and shifts in metabolism can cause the body to respond differently to food and exercise.

2. Hormonal Fluctuations

During perimenopause and menopause, hormone levels begin to fluctuate or decline.

These changes can influence mood, sleep, metabolism, and overall energy levels.

3. Poor Sleep

Many women experience sleep disruptions such as:

• waking up during the night
• lighter sleep
• night sweats or hot flashes

And when sleep suffers, everything else—mood, energy, and metabolism—tends to suffer as well.

4. Low Energy

Even women who were once full of energy can suddenly feel fatigued more often.

This can lead to less movement and growing frustration.

5. Loss of Strength and Muscle

After the age of 40, women naturally begin losing muscle mass if strength training is not part of their routine.

This can affect metabolism, posture, and overall strength.

The encouraging news is that strength can absolutely be rebuilt with the right training approach.

6. Stress and Overwhelm

Many women navigating this stage of life are balancing multiple responsibilities, including:

• careers
• family responsibilities
• aging parents
• major life transitions

Stress can have a significant impact on both physical and emotional health.

7. Digestive Changes

Some women begin noticing digestive issues such as:

• bloating
• slower digestion
• food sensitivities

Hormonal shifts, stress levels, and lifestyle habits can all influence digestive health.

8. Brain Fog and Mental Clarity

Another common complaint is brain fog.

Many women report feeling forgetful, unfocused, or mentally slower than before.

Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can affect brain chemistry and cognitive function.

Mental health also deserves attention during this stage of life. Research has shown that women in midlife experience increased rates of depression and emotional distress, highlighting the importance of support and awareness during this transition.

9. Confidence Challenges

Even strong and accomplished women can struggle with self-confidence when their bodies begin to change.

However, this stage can also become a powerful opportunity to rediscover confidence and strength in a new way.

10. Not Knowing Where to Start

With so much conflicting health advice online, many women simply feel confused about what actually works.

Diet trends, workout programs, and hormone advice can make it difficult to know where to begin.

Final Thoughts

The transition through perimenopause and menopause can feel confusing at times, but it can also become a powerful turning point.

With the right support, knowledge, and lifestyle habits, women can feel strong, energized, and connected to their bodies again.
